Time Machine – different times same line

The diagram above is showing the different directions of my research. Departing from Time-machine, there are a few categories of directions.

Scientific: How does a quartz crystal used in watches, what part time has in cosmology and general relativity, Time dilation (how time is different in other gravitational spaces), what are theories of parallel time and realities, the connection between time and the speed of light.

Measuring time: clocks, watches, calendars, metronomes. Maybe feelings (it felt like a life time)? Maybe through narrative time (see below).

Philosophical: Human beens perception of time. Is time linear? Why do we call manipulation of time “travel” as if it was like traveling through space. Is time the 4th dimension? How do animals perceive time?

Linguistic (Sociological Psychological): Where are terms about time coming from? How did they evolve? heres a few examples – Your wasting my time; I don’t have time (how can one have time); time is money; time is escaping; time lapse; Time stood still/froze; time stamp; to be ahead or behind time; to race agains time; to have the time of the life; catch someone in a bad time; must have a lot of time on hands; all in good time; a matter of time; time will tell; stand the test of time; two-time (same line!!!); big time; time flies; time heals; time is of the essence;

Narrative time: the idea that narrative not only manipulate time but has its own perception of time. “The kid fell and hit her knee” is a short unit of time in a story. A long unit of time could be describing the same event that spreads over one second, spread over much more – “Lia saw the face of her grandmother as she stumbled and fell in the middle of her school show. She was disconnected from reality for a split second and only the pain of her left knee hitting the the stage, which made a wooden clank sound that filled the theater hall with loud silence, made her come back to the theater. The pain started growing up and down her knee and she could only think of one thing – her brother Tom that predicted this to happen”.

The representation of time in the digital world: video player controllers, remote control (needed when we need to manipulate time in a digital platform – watching a movie, listening to music) the known symbols of time line, play, fast forward, rewind, pause, slow motion are a simplification of our perception of time. In some advanced animation and editing programs there are more symbols and actions like:  keyframe interpolation, time mapping and more.

Phantasy:  In addition to describing events happening in different times, ideas and perception of time are often being described through movies and TV shows. Motion pictures are a significant tool to manipulate time (thus Time-machine). Sometime serve as simply a portal to different times in the case of historical period drama by telling some story while describing visually the past (e.g. Schindler’s list about 1943) or estimating the future in speculative fiction (e.g. Elysium about 2154). Yet some times Motion picture introduce an idea or concept about time, such as travel through time, parallel time and realities, time as a resource, being stuck in a time loop, manipulation of time through a futuristic technology etc. Another play on time is remaking of same story (Mad Max of 1979 and 2015).

message from the past

I watched different movies and shows that connected to my research and found “Time laps”. Not a big success but interesting concept of a machine able to give on frame from the future. One character is using this to send messages to her past self. The it struck me that we do that all the time with memos. But it couldnt be me as It will be expected, so I used my usual subject of experiment – my girlfriend

The black mirror episode “White christmas” describing a futuristic situation where through new technology, a digital copy of ones consciousness is possible to create. The “copy” believes it is the real person and therefor can be manipulated by anything that the person might be subject to. This is where the connection to time machines comes to place. Accelerating the copy’s perception of time, so six month for the copy go by in a matter of seconds in the real world, doing this in order to break the will power of the digital “copy”. The copy then gets traumatized by its solitude with nothing to do and agrees to anything.
The copy and the world are on the same line yet experiencing different times.

A reconnection to Sextant: As an antique object such as the sextant will through me back to its ancient time (by that being a time machine) I found a backward connection to sextant as I was looking for technology that had to do with time. In Celestial navigation, sextant relies heavily on time and require the knowledge of accurate current time in order to navigate in space.

Thoughts:

An interesting concept and came up with the term: “different times on same line“.

Like in weather – a “feels like” parameter could be added to a movie description or any specs that contain time.

If feeling are a way to measure, what is it based on? Is pain a teim machine as it makes time feels longer? The state of boredom? sadness? Excitement? thrill? can state of laughter make time feels like its passes faster?

Hacking time. When we run are we hacking time? sleep?

Time == change. The past is memory, the presence is our senses (perceive), future is creativity (predict).
