Perceptual chronometer

The same “amount” of time perceived differently

I made some experiments with slow-motion and time-laps as different representations of time.

zoomingIn

I tried to slow down a  slowmo video by making a slow motion video of that video. I discovered it is exactly like zooming in when there is no more pixel information to zoom into, at a certain point you just stretch the pixels.

Comparing between perceived time and clock time experiment

time_coachI became a Time coach… With a timer watch I bought I started measuring everything. At the beginning I just measured different events (i.e. ‘meeting with Caroline’, ‘Talked to Sergio’ ) later I felt it needed more context (i.e. “struggling on node.js”, “waisting time no progress”). The next step was experimenting on people.

Trying on my self and on others require different technics. It is important for the subject not to count seconds while being measured.
One way I used is asking a subject to do something (eat food Im giving, watch a video, gaze at me etc). During this action, I will do some distinctive action such as touch the persons face, shout, clap,  jump. Over the duration of the experience I will repeat the distinctive action twice.

Ask the subject:

  1. How much time did it FEEL, between first and second action?
  2. Is the action you made pleasant/embarrassing/weird/nice/annoying/painful
  3. I will ask to put on a scale the niceness or badness of the experience. i will take a picture of each subject [with a face that describes he’s feeling around this].

Different actions to ask subjects:

    • Loud noise
    • Gaze
    • Eat something sweet
    • sleep
    • pain
    • tickle/back rub
    • smell incents
    • hold breath

goPro-cheapIn order to document, I created a pocket in my shirt that would fit my phone and leave room for the camera. Its my cheap go-pro:

Some results from last week experiments:

Ppl always gave rounded times, and where always very off (20 to 50%)
